HOUSTON -- Police took one man into custody after he allegedly cut a hole in a fence to steal copper from a CenterPoint substation in southwest Houston.

Police made the arrest early Tuesday morning in the 2900 block of Westpark Drive after the suspect was spotted on surveillance cameras.

When officers arrived, the man was still on the scene and nearby was a gym bag full of copper wiring and tools, police said. He was taken into custody without incident.

HPD officers say copper theft is a continuing problem in the Houston area.

"Not at this substation in particular, but there is a problem with copper theft across the city not only at electric substations but other facilities that have a lot of wiring," said HPD Lt. Larry Crowson.
