HOUSTON -- Thursday was a sunny and chilly day in Houston.

Much of the cold was brought on by the wind. Wind gusts were as high as 49 mph in some areas, and there were some reports of minor wind damage. The winds gusts will settle down this evening when the wind advisory expires at 6 p.m.

Temperatures are in the 50s as we head into the evening hours. Once the sun goes down, we’ll be falling into the 40s, so make sure you’re wearing a jacket, said KHOU 11 News Meteorologist David Paul.

Friday is the winter solstice. It’s also the day when the world is supposed to end at 5:12 a.m. You can also expect an overnight light freeze with temps dropping into the high 20s and mid 30s.

It’ll be sunny and cool again on Friday with temps in the 50s.

We’ll see a brief warm up on Saturday and Sunday. Looking at the 7-day forecast, our next best chance of rain will be on Christmas Day.

For those traveling to the Midwest for the upcoming holiday, be sure to check with your airline; the latest cold blast dropped snow over much of the Great Plains and some airports, like Chicago, are experiencing 30-45 minute flight delays.
