HOUSTON -- On Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 p.m., a homeowner caught a burglar red-handed and confronted him with a gun, according to Houston police.
HPD Sgt. S. F. Red said the homeowner saw the thief walking out of his yard on Priest Street in northeast Houston, carrying the homeowner’s window air conditioning unit.
The homeowner, who did not wish to be identified, pulled out his gun and shot at the apparent burglar, police said.
“The homeowner was legally armed,” Sgt. Red said. “The homeowner followed the suspect and the suspect fled on foot. He called the police. Officers came in and surrounded the area. Officers found him using canine, and he was taken into custody.”
The apparent burglar was hiding in a backyard several blocks away. Police said as the homeowner gave chase in his truck, a couple of other people saw what was going on and joined in.
Officers gave the homeowner credit for helping them catch the suspect. The suspect told a KHOU 11 News crew he needed the ac-unit, although he added, it wasn’t working.
