HOUSTON -- A motorcycle rider was struck and killed on Highway 288 Sunday afternoon.

The accident happened around 1 p.m. near Almeda Genoa.

The inbound lanes of Highway 288 were closed near the Beltway for four hours while police investigated the accident.

Early reports indicate the motorcyclist was hit by a car after stopping to check out a problem with his bike, according to the Houston Fire Department.

A witness tweeted that a man and woman performed CPR on the victim while waiting for the ambulance to arrive. But the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Traffic was backed up for miles. Rubber-neckers in the southbound lanes also slowed traffic.

The lanes reopened just before 5 p.m.
