CROSBY, Texas -- The most populous county in Texas needs more room for laying to rest poor people.

The Harris County Community Services Department says dedication ceremonies are planned Wednesday for a new 92-acre indigent cemetery. The site in Crosby joins the Harris County Cemetery in Houston, which is reaching capacity.

Further details on the current cemetery weren't immediately released.

Phase one of the new development has 11 acres. Burial sites can hold 2,500 adults and 1,500 infants, plus 340 cremation vaults. Each vault can hold about 200 remains.

Department officials say 50 acres were purchased by Harris County for about $340,000. The rest comes from land owned by the county and donated for the cemetery. Federal and Houston funds were also used.

Census figures show the Harris County population tops 4.3 million.
