HOUSTON – The Houston Police Department’s Auto Theft Division is asking for the public’s help identifying a person who stole one of its bait cars Wednesday afternoon.

Hidden cameras inside the car captured video of the suspect getting in and looking in the console and glove box for valuables.

The suspect, who had tattoos on his right arm, drove the vehicle to the Lyons Avenue area, located just north of the East Freeway. He then jumped out and ran away before police could get to him.

The vehicle is equipped with GPS and an electronic engine-kill switch. HPD actually could have killed the engine remotely, but the suspect was on the freeway and going too fast. A quick stop would have been too dangerous.

Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.

HPD believes the suspect is dangerous, because in the video you can see him carrying a gun.
