MISSOURI CITY, Texas – A fight with a suspected car thief leads to an officer involved shooting early Sunday in southwest Houston, police said.
According to the Houston Police Department, Demontre D. Bridges, 17, is charged with attempting to disarm a police officer, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and evading arrest. The charges were filed with the Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office.
The charges stem from an incident that happened at 4 a.m. at an apartment complex in the 14000 block of Fondren, police said.
Police said they were searching for a stolen vehicle when the suspect drove up in the stolen car.
When police went to confront him, the suspect struggled with a female officer and then tried to take a gun away from the second officer, M. Rivera.
Fearing for his life, the second officer opened fire, police said.
“The suspect has a graze wound on the left side of his chest,” HPD spokeswoman Jodi Silva said. “He was treated at the scene and released back into custody of officers.”
The officers only suffered minor injuries in the struggle. The officer who fired his weapon has been with HPD since 2009 and was assigned to the Southwest Patrol Division.
