HOUSTON—The Houston Police department is trying to put the brakes on thousands of red light runners who haven’t made good on their traffic violations.

Officials said drivers are not taking the red light cameras seriously, and too many think they can get away with running lights. Those cameras are meant to save lives.
Reports said that nearly 78,000 people have fines that are currently delinquent.
Police are giving those violators a small break, consider it a holiday gift.
Those who have been ignoring the tickets will have until January 30 to pay up.
After that, the police department will try to make it illegal for violators to navigate the city streets. They are asking the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles to put a hold on vehicle registration renewals until fines are paid.
