HOUSTON – Officers chased a suspect along the Sam Houston Tollway before the man crashed through a guardrail and came to a stop at Bush Intercontinental Airport.

According to the Houston Police Department, it all started around 3 a.m. on the tollway’s frontage road at Ella Boulevard.

An officer pulled up to the suspect’s car, which was stopped in the roadway, police said. The officer said the man was sleeping behind the wheel, and when awoken, he sped away. Police chased the man eastbound to the Hardy Airport Connector and then onto JFK Boulevard.

Police said the man drove onto airport property and eventually crashed through a pedestrian guardrail outside the Terminal D drop-off.

Police said the driver faces a charge of driving while intoxicated and felony evading.

HPD said the man told officers he sped away because he thought someone was trying to rob him.
