HOUSTON—A mother who was arrested for leaving her little girl alone in an apartment in the middle of the night came up with several different excuses of why she did so, according to Houston police.
Elisea Hernandez Ramirez, 24, was charged with abandoning a child.
Ramirez’s 5-year-old daughter was found alone at an apartment complex in the 10200 block of Telephone Road on September 15 around 4 a.m. A neighbor found her crying at a staircase and calling out for her mother, police said.
The neighbor asked the child where she lived and the child pointed to her apartment unit.
The neighbor gave the little girl a towel because she was cold, then called his girlfriend to come and comfort her until help could arrive. They also checked the little girl’s apartment, which was unlocked, but found no adults inside.
Police arrived about 45 minutes later and the little girl was taken to Children’s Protective Services.
The mother did not arrive to pick her daughter up from CPS until 7:30 a.m.
During questioning, she gave investigators several different stories as to how her little girl ended up alone.
First she said that she left the girl alone around 6 a.m. so she could go and pick up a sick friend, but that statement did not match with police records showing they arrived to the scene at 4:45 a.m. Ramirez then changed her story and said she left the apartment at 3:50 a.m. and was only gone for 45 minutes while she went to her friend’s house who stayed in the same complex, according to court documents.
She changed her story again, investigators said, saying that she left her child for three hours while she went to a friend’s house to watch movies. Finally, she said she was making out in a truck with a guy in the parking lot and did not hear her daughter crying for her because the music playing in the truck was too loud.
Ramirez said she initially locked the door to the apartment, but admitted there was no phone inside the unit and her daughter had not been trained on what to do in case of an emergency.
Ramirez said the little girl’s father does live with them, but he had left for work at 2 a.m.
Ramirez’s bail was set at $52,000.
