HOUSTON –- A man wanted for traffic warrants led police on a brief chase down the North Freeway early Friday, Houston police said.

According to officers with the Houston Police Department, the chase started around 2 a.m. when an officer spotted a red SUV speeding. The driver initially pulled over, but police said he took off as soon as the officer got out of his patrol car.

The driver then led police off the freeway where he turned into a parking lot and went through a grassy area. The man then ran away on foot.

Police said they found the driver a short time later. He told officers he fled because he didn’t want to be arrested for outstanding traffic warrants.
