HOUSTON – A driver told officers he fell asleep just before his car slammed into a southwest Houston utility pole, killing his passenger, police said.

According to the Houston Police Department, the crash happened around 6:30 a.m. Saturday near Hillcroft and Beechnut.

Neither the driver nor his female passenger were wearing seat belts, according to officers at the scene.

Police said the vehicle’s airbags did not deploy, but the impact was severe enough to break the utility pole.

Officers said there were no indications that the driver was under the influence of alcohol.

Hillcroft was closed for several hours while police investigated and CenterPoint crews replaced the pole.
