HOUSTON – A man was taken into custody early Wednesday morning after a brief chase on the southwest side of Houston, police said.

The chase started shortly before 4 a.m. when an officer with the Houston Police Department attempted to pull over a car for running a stop sign on Fountain View.

The man allegedly refused to stop and drove about a mile before jumping out on Chimney Rock and trying to run away on foot. Officers boxed in the suspect and took him into custody.

Officers found crack cocaine on the driver, which they say may be why he fled. He now faces a felony evading charge as well as possession of a narcotic charge.

Police said the Toyota the man was driving was a rental car.
