HOUSTON – A 16-year-old male is dead after being shot while playing with a handgun Saturday at a southwest Houston apartment complex, police said.
According to the Houston Police Department, the teenage victim and a 15-year-old female friend were playing with a .45-caliber handgun when the firearm accidentally went off. The victim was struck in the chest.
The incident happened just before 8 p.m. at the Bellaire Gardens Apartments in the 6100 block of Bellaire Boulevard near Rampart Street, police said.
The victim died at the scene, police said.
The case has now been referred to a grand jury.
