HOUSTON – A mother and stepfather used a bat and a pole to beat their 8-year-old because the boy was not doing well in school, according to the Houston Police Department.

The mother, Santina Maria Broussard, and her husband, Syed Shazad “Amir” Gillani, were charged with felony injury to a child.

School administrators called Children’s Protective Services on February 17 after seeing several bruises all over the little boy’s body.

The boy said his parents first used a mop pole to beat him, then pulled out a red plastic bat when the pole broke. His mother then held him while “Amir” struck him, according to court documents. The boy suffered bruises on his buttocks, the back of both legs, his back and his arms.

During an interview, the mother admitted to using the bat to “discipline” her son. She said her son had not lived with her for most of his life. She said when he moved in, just a few months before the incident, he was not being respectful toward her.

Broussard was released after posting a $5,000 bond. Gillani remains in jail with no bond due to forfeiture of a 2013 credit card abuse case.
