HOUSTON — An innocent man who was just trying to stop a fight at a southwest Houston apartment complex was shot and killed Thursday night, according to Houston police.
It happened at the Casa Miranda Apartments, located in the 12200 block of Fondren at West Airport, around 8 p.m.
Police said a large group of people were gathered in the parking lot when a fight broke out. The man, 26-year-old Brandon Dorsey, was trying to intervene and bring it to a peaceful end when someone started shooting.
“Boom, boom, boom. It was a lot of gunfire out here,” said neighbor Virginia Jackson.
Dorsey was struck by gunfire and died at the scene. A nurse nearby tried to save Dorsey’s life.
“I started CPR. It was automatically instinct just kicked in. I was giving chest compressions, mouth to mouth. He started spitting out. I told him to spit out,” Evas Steverson, a nurse, said. “Very, very sad. I was hoping he would pull through I did. I was not successful.”
Everyone else fled. Dozens of shell casings were found at the scene.
“I was sitting watching ESPN in my room. I heard 10-11 gun shots,” Anthony Bell.
Police do not have a suspect description at this time.
Friends of the victim said, although Dorsey did have a troubled past, he didn’t deserve to die.
“He (is) a good dude. He didn’t bother nobody, he well respected around here,” Johnathan Waynes, a close friend of the victim, said. “He taught me how to be a man.”
Dorsey was trying to turn his life around after spending some time behind bars.
“He stayed out the way. He would’ve been home for a month,” Waynes said. “I hope who ever did it pays for this.”
Friends said Dorsey leaves behind a 1-year-old boy. Police are asking the community to do the right thing and call with tips. The number is 713-222-TIPS.
