M A M Spa
HOUSTON – A handcuffed suspect opened fire on an officer who caught him holding up two women at a spa in west Houston late Thursday, according to Houston police.
Police were dispatched to a burglary in progress at the “M A M Spa” located in the 13600 block of Westheimer around 11 p.m.
Officers arrived and found the front door locked, but heard women crying inside. Fearing for their safety, officers forced entry through a secondary door and found two female employees being held by a male suspect.
The suspect surrendered, but said he had an accomplice in the back of the business. One officer sat the suspect on the floor by the front door, while the other went to investigate. When the officer detaining the suspect turned his back, still trying to cover his partner, the suspect stood up and somehow managed to pull a gun out of his pants and opened fire. The suspect then took off running down the hall. The officer in back heard the shots and saw the suspect running toward him, so he began shooting. Still, the suspect managed to run away from the business, but he did not get very far.
Officers found the suspect collapsed in a nearby shopping center parking lot. He had been shot possibly three times. The suspect was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital in serious condition, police said.
Neither HPD officer was hurt. The women were also not harmed.
Police said the suspect lied. There was never any accomplice. He made up the story in an effort to distract them for his getaway attempt.
