HOUSTON -- The driver of a small sedan was seriously injured Friday morning when they crashed into a Houston Independent School District bus, police said.
This conflicts with an earlier statement from the Houston Police Department that indicated the driver had passed away.
The accident happened around 6:30 a.m. in the 7500-block of Beechnut between Highway 59 and Fondren. Aerial views from Air 11 showed the black car’s roof was crushed in, suggesting it may have gone underneath the bus at an intersection.
HISD said the bus was transporting three transfer students to Scarborough High School on the northwest side of town when the crash occurred.
One female student was taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries. The other two students, both male, were evaluated at the scene and were then transported to school. One of the young men later complained about leg pain and was evaluated.
The school bus driver was not hurt, according to HISD. As is standard policy following a crash, HISD said the driver would be temporarily removed from driving duties.
HISD said the Houston Police Department would handle the investigation into the cause of the crash.
