HOUSTON—For the first time, the word HOUSTON will be allowed on a license plate and that plate will go to the highest bidder Friday during the Great Plate Auction.
The auction was scheduled to be held at 7 p.m. inside Reliant Stadium. Online bidding was also available on MyPlates.com.
Other unique plates up for auction included ROCKETS, DYNAMO and BENTLEY.
The most expensive plate ever auctioned in Texas was FERRARI, which sold for $15,000.
The winning bidders will get to keep their special plates for 10 years.
Proceeds from the auction will go to the state and to charities.
