HOUSTON – The Houston Independent School District school board voted Thursday to approve a policy change to ban offensive or culturally-insensitive mascots.

The HISD Board voted 7 to 0 with one abstention to approve the policy update.

Four HISD schools are impacted: The Lamar High School Redskins, the Westbury High School Rebels, the Hamilton Middle School Indians and the Welch Middle School Warriors.

Each school will be required to follow district policy in selecting its new mascot.

The changes are expected to go into effect at the beginning of the 2014-2015 school year.
