HOUSTON –- Firefighters said a late night fire in west Houston appeared to have started in the kitchen area of a home, but they don’t believe cooking was the cause of the blaze.

The Houston Fire Department was called to a home on Carvel Lane at Leawood Boulevard around 11:45 p.m. Wednesday. They found heavy smoke coming from the back of the one-story residence.

The family inside managed to make it out safe.

Firefighters were able to quickly contain the blaze but not before it destroyed the kitchen.

The family told firefighters they were cooking at the time of the fire, but the fire chief said evidence suggested the fire started away from the stove. Investigators are now working to determine the exact cause.
