HOUSTON -- Houston Fire Department Captain Bill Dowling, one of the firefighters injured in last year’s deadly motel fire, has reached a new milestone in his recovery.
His family posted an update and new photo to their community Facebook page on Sunday night.
Dowling’s wife says the firefighter has been completing tasks like lifting himself up and twisting his hips. She says he's even able to reach across the table for food and he's got quite an appetite, and he also has started speaking.
He even told his brother-in-law he wants to go to Twin Peaks!

Bill has had an outstanding weekend. There has been a major shift in his abilities, and we are doing cart wheels around the Dowling household. He has taken the initiative to reach out and complete tasks on his own. He has been pushing himself up into a sitting position, lifting himself up and twisting his hips, reaching for food off of our plates, and eating a lot!!! The best part was when he saw a gallon of milk sitting out on the counter today, and he looked at me and said, "put the milk in the refrigerator". Hello....last I checked, you couldn't talk! This is typical Bill fashion. He didn't speak as a kid, but then one day came to his mom and told her ,"I need to wash my hands". It's like he is being reborn. Oh, and did I mention he told my brother-in-law he wants to go to Twin Peaks! Welcome back baby!! I've never doubted that God is going to restore you. We are on our way!!!
