FREEPORT, Texas - At the SPCA Thrift Store in Freeport, it’s all about giving, from the donated items to the time and effort of volunteers like Harold Clem and his wife, Billie, who have been doing this for 14 years.
The money raised here helps fund the Brazoria County SPCA’s low cost spay and neuter program.
“Every penny goes to the SPCA,” Clem said. “Goes directly into their account.”
Except for this week.
On Monday, the store was closed, and Morissia Banks had just finished counting the previous week’s earnings of $2,000.
She placed the money in a bag and left it on the front counter, when she stepped away to help a volunteer.
Police said that is when a man entered through the back door and stole it.
“I’m a native Freeporter,” Banks said. “It hurts my feelings that one of our neighbors would do that.”
“They not only stole the money,” Clem said. “They stole our time and effort.”
Police said they have a suspect in the case. He apparently lives nearby and has been in the store before, but so far they’ve been unable to locate him.
