HOUSTON—We all know Houston has some great restaurants. And this holiday weekend you can chow down for just chump change at many of the best places in town.
We are in the last days of Houston Restaurant Week. It started August 1, so it’s more like restaurant month. It was supposed to end Saturday, August 21 but it has been extended until Labor Day, Monday September 6. Restaurant Week began in 2003.
Scores of restaurants participate by offering fixed price lunches for $20 and dinners for $35. Three dollars of the lunch money is donated to the Houston Food Bank. Five dollars of what you pay for dinner goes to the charity that helps feed our city’s hungry men, women and children.
Restaurants offer two, three and even four course meals for $20 or $35. Typically, diners are allowed to chose from a limited list of appetizers, entrees and desserts.
The other day at Cafe Moustache the private back room was filled with ladies working on the gala fundraiser for Houston’s only resident musical theater company. Chairwoman Becky Page of The Masquerade Theatre said the group was thoroughly enjoying their meal during Restaurant Week.
"The chef is wonderful. The food’s very reasonably priced, wonderful wine list," said Page. "We’re just really enjoying our day here."
