HOUSTON -- The woman dubbed the "Grandma Bandit" pleaded guilty to two counts of bank robbery late Tuesday.
Theresa Gaas, 56, was sentenced to three years deferred adjudication, meaning she won't serve prison time and her record will be wiped clean if she meets the conditions of probation.
FBI agents arrested Gaas last September, a few days after she was caught on camera robbing two Houston banks.
The gray-haired robber hit the Compass Bank at 1217 West 43rd Street around on September 25. About an hour later, she robbed the Compass Bank at 204 West 19th Street in the Heights.
In both cases, she told the tellers she had a gun and demanded money.
She got away with cash in both robberies.
Neighbor Lena Ramirez was shocked to hear that Gaas had robbed a couple of banks.
"I couldn't believe it man. It takes a lot of nerve," Ramirez said after Gass was arrested in September. "I didn't recognize her. She had a cap on."
Ramirez described Gaas as a hard worker who helped her mother.
"She's the one that cleans the yard for her mother. She takes care of her mother," said Ramirez.
Authorities say that Gaas had a lot of bills.
"Well, I'm sure she has a lot of medical bills for her mother," said Ramirez.
