HOUSTON — A local girl who celebrated her 12th birthday on December 12, 2012 collected dozens of coats for the Star of Hope shelter.

Kristiana Alaniz had asked that instead of giving her gifts, people donate coats for kids living at the shelter. She collected more than 50 coats at a big party Wednesday at Discovery Green.

“I want them to know someone’s thinking about them and wanting them to stay warm,” she said. “It’s not just a holiday, but it’s a giving season.  Instead of receiving things and gifts, I thought it would be better to give to those who are in need,” she said.

This isn’t the first time Kristiana’s spread Christmas cheer for her birthday. When she turned 10 back in 2010 she collected blankets for the Star of Hope.
