GALVESTON, Texas -- A Galveston museum has acquired a 26-foot Navy whaleboat that’s already been put on display even though it needs some work.
The Galveston County Daily News reported Monday that the American Undersea Warfare Center in Galveston will seek volunteers to help restore the whaleboat. Donations are being accepted to renovate the all-purpose shallow-water vessel.
Museum director Lisa Simmons says the center in Galveston plans to build a display platform for the whaleboat, which carries the markings LEX 2.
Curator DeWayne Davis says he believes the whaleboat was once aboard the USS Lexington, a World War II-era aircraft carrier that’s now a museum in Corpus Christi Bay.
