GALVESTON — Galveston police narcotics officers seized a record 24 pounds of liquid codeine and other drugs during a raid at a mid-island residence, authorities said Monday.

The Friday afternoon raid in the 4100 block of Avenue R1/2 included the confiscation of cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana a handgun and $5,035 in cash, Galveston interim police Chief Henry Porretto said.

“Hopefully, we put a big dent in narcotics trafficking, especially codeine,” Porretto said. “This is the largest codeine seizure that our narcotics unit has made that we can find in our files.”

Codeine is a mild pain-reliever that can be used in a variety of ways. Police also find the drug soaked into cigars, Porretto said.
