GALVESTON, Texas—A substitute Galveston bus driver is now facing charges over a wreck that killed a bicycle rider in May.

Investigators say that Gwendolyn Joyce Rivers, 50, was looking at a map when she made a turn and hit the 75-year-old victim. She has now been charged with criminally negligent homicide.

Students on the bus saw the whole thing and so did cameras as a nearby convenience store and on the bus. Police say they decided to charge her after seeing the video.

"The bus driver was not seen to look to the right and just kept looking to the left and down at the document when the light changed. That’s when she made a right turn and struck the pedestrian," said Lieutenant Michael Gray with the Galveston Police.

Rivers’ attorney said she’s upset about the incident and needs to rest.
