GALVESTON, Texas – A man driving a golf cart was arrested and charged with DWI after his passenger was critically injured.

It happened Sunday at about 7:42 p.m. in the 4000 block of Liberty Drive. The Galveston Police Department received a report that a man was hit by a golf cart and was left unconscious and bleeding from the head.

Police said the victim, identified as Mark McKenna, had been riding as a passenger in a golf cart driven by Ronald Machac when McKenna fell out of the golf cart, striking his head on the pavement.

Machac told police that he and McKenna had been out on a boat that afternoon, and were returning from the dock to the house they were staying at on Liberty Drive. He said as he turned into the driveway McKenna fell out of the golf cart.

After an investigation officers said they discovered Machac had been drinking prior to the event.

Machac was administered several standardized field sobriety tests which investigators said led them to believe he was in fact intoxicated. Police said Machac also consented to having his blood drawn to determine his exact level of intoxication.

The victim was transported to a hospital where he underwent emergency surgery and was still listed in critical condition Monday.

Ronald Machac was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated. His bond was set at $5,000.
