HOUSTON—Charges were pending Sunday evening against a suspected drunk driver who police said caused a crash that sent four children to the hospital.
It happened in the early morning hours at the intersection of Fry Road and the Interstate- 10 feeder in west Houston.
Authorities said 22-year-old Lourdes Lopez was driving north on Fry and ran the light. That’s when her Jeep SUV was t-boned by an eastbound pickup truck.
The impact ejected a 12-year-old boy from the Jeep. Three other children ranging in age from 1 to 9 were also badly hurt.
The children were transported by helicopter to Memorial Hermann Hospital.
Lopez and a 45-year-old man who was riding in the front passenger seat were being treated for non life-threatening injuries.
Authorities said no one from the pickup truck was hurt.
People who live near the Cypress home where some of the victims live had a tough time digesting what had happened.
“They’re good neighbors,” said Edgar Maldonado, who lives two houses down. “They’re a good family. We spend really good times together. It’s kind of hard to hear the news.”
“This is tough,” said Andrew Okafor. “Anything can happen at any time so we all have to get ready for whatever comes our way.”
Police said tests confirmed Lopez was intoxicated. It remained unclear precisely what charges she would face.
