GALVESTON, Texas -- A federal judge sentenced to 33 months in federal prison on an obstruction of justice charge has been moved to a state prison in Florida, an official said Friday.

Samuel B. Kent, 60, who presided in Galveston before his impeachment, was convicted in May of obstruction of justice after accepting a plea agreement and admitting to nonconsensual sexual misconduct with two female court employees.

Kent initially was sent to Devens Federal Medical Center in Ayers, Mass., which is at a decommissioned military base near Boston.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons has an agreement with the Florida Department of Corrections to swap prisoners, John Gaither, a federal corrections manager based near Orlando, said.

Gaither said he didn’t know why Kent was moved to Florida.

Citing security reasons, Florida Department of Corrections spokeswoman Joellyn Rackleff was unable to provide details of where Kent is housed in Florida or why he was moved.

Kent’s scheduled release is May 5, 2011.
