HOUSTON — Questions continued to smolder about the origin of a fire at a southwest Houston condominium complex hours after firefighters had stamped out the flames.
The blaze was reported just past midnight at the Westbury Gardens Condominiums, located near Arboles Street and Chimney Rock.
According to the owner of the condo unit where the fire was believed to have started, it was deliberately set by a former roommate, who had snuck into the one bedroom unit.
“When I went to take the garbage out, I came upstairs,” said Eric Sins. “I got in bed and noticed billows of smoke coming out of my bedroom.”
Sins, who claimed the suspect had become angry with him after he kicked him out of his condo, said he saw the suspect speeding away from the complex in his pickup.
But neighbors with a long history of trouble with Sins expressed serious doubts about his account, and said something bad was bound to happen.
“It was a ticking time bomb,” said James Davis. “It was just a matter of time.”
Fire officials labeled the blaze suspicious.
A total of four condo units were expected to be condemned but no one was hurt.
So far, no one has been arrested or charged.
