HOUSTON -- A fire broke out in the shoe aisle of a newly opened Walmart in southeast Houston late Sunday, sending workers and customers running.

The Houston Fire Department was called to the store on S. Wayside Drive near the Gulf Freeway around 10:45 p.m. According to firefighters a shelf filled with shoes went up in flames.

A witness provided video of the incident to KHOU 11 News. It showed a worker jumping into action and spraying down the blaze with a fire extinguisher as customers ran away.

The store filled with smoke and was evacuated.

No injuries were reported, but the health department was called in to look over food inside the store to see if anything was contaminated.

Store manager Victor Pena wouldn’t comment on the incident, only saying the investigation was on-going. The store reopened at 6 a.m. Monday.

The Walmart is Houston’s newest and only just opened last Wednesday.
