LA MARQUE, Texas—Firefighters from Texas City responded to a fire that destroyed a store and sent smoke over La Marque High School early Thursday.

It was reported around 7 a.m. on Vautier Road near McKinney Drive.

Firefighters said the fire broke out inside an old retail store attached to a home across the street from the high school.

The owner Don Bishop and his wife Bonnie made it out OK, but they said they didn’t have insurance for the property.  The owner said he thought about $200,000 in inventory was inside the business when it caught fire.

The store, Days Gone By, was shut down about a year ago but recently reopened.

“There’s a reason for everything. I’m having trouble seeing what the reason is, but there’s a reason for everything,” he said.

It’s not known what caused the fire.

“There were no heaters going. You know there was nothing going there. The only thing I can think of is it had to be an electrical short somewhere started. I don’t know,” the owner said.
