CONROE, Texas – A 42-year-old man is dead and his son is in critical condition after they were involved in a head-on collision with another vehicle Saturday night in Montgomery County.
Just after 9 p.m. troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety responded to a major accident in the 26000 block of FM 2978.
When they arrived on the scene, the Magnolia Fire Department was in the process of removing victims from two vehicles. All three victims were in critical condition causing Montgomery County Hospital District to request two Life Flight helicopters.
The first helicopter left with the victims of a 2003 Subaru SUV -- a 42-year-old Tomball man and his 15-year-old son. The father died on arrival at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston.
The second helicopter transported 21-year-old Piper Landon, of The Woodlands, who was driving a 1997 Nissan. He was flown to Memorial Hermann Hospital in critical condition.
According to DPS Sgt. Terry Barnhill, the driver in the Subaru was heading south on FM 2978 with his son when Landon, who was traveling north, crossed the center line striking the Subaru head-on.
Barnhill believes alcohol did play a factor in Landon crossing the center line. FM 2978 does have rumble strips down the center line to alert drivers that they have crossed over.
The Montgomery County District Attorney's Vehicular Crimes Unit also responded to the scene to assist in the close to five hour investigation. Part of that investigation involved putting the vehicles back together like a puzzle at the first slammed into each other.
