MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas -- An elderly man with a history of Alzheimer’s was struck and killed as he pushed a trash can on I-45 north of Houston, troopers said early Friday.

Houston TransStar reported the incident just before 6 a.m.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, 74-year-old Bobby Lee Poe was struck by a car in the freeway’s southbound lanes near Woodlands Parkway. He died at the scene.

Troopers said Poe lived not far from where the incident occurred.

Officials closed the freeway’s southbound lanes for more than two hours during the investigation.
