HOUSTON—A local family is asking for the public’s help finding a hit-and-run driver who left their loved one in a coma after a wreck near the intersection of FM 1960 and Veterans Memorial.
Derrick Gordon has been in a coma for nearly a month.
On July 31, while riding his Harley Davidson Road King, Gordon flew up and landed on the front hood of a vehicle after he was hit by a driver.
"It’s just amazing to even see 1,000-pound plus bike in flight, you know it was just devastating," said Kenneth Furch, who was riding his motorcycle in the next lane. "Actually, to be quite honest with you, I thought he was dead."
Furch said shortly after he and Gordon pulled out on FM 1960, he felt a car coming up from behind him fast.
"And when I looked back he was coming so fast I hit the throttle just enough to soften the blow if he hit me, but the car went around me," he said.
Furch said the vehicle looked like a grayish Toyota Camry, and the driver of that car may have been racing, because in the next lane what appeared to be a dark-colored SUV hit Gordon.
Neither vehicle stopped.
Gordon’s family and friends said they haven’t heard from any detectives since then.
"It’s just like the police, they aren’t doing anything about it, and it’s just crazy," Furch said.
11 News checked and learned the accident is being investigated by the Harris County’s Sheriff’s Hit and Run Division.
The division consists of only two detectives who say they are overwhelmed, which is why a majority of the cases go unsolved.
"When they decide to come down and talk to me, I will be waiting on Harris County," said Brenda Gordon, the victim’s mother.
The sheriff’s department put out a press release asking for the public’s help, but the release never mentions the dark SUV.
"A lot of people praying for him. We have churches. We have prayer warriors all over calling us saying to stay strong," Brenda Gordon said.
Derrick Gordon is a husband and father, and his wife said she’s holding on to hope.
"I talk to him because I know he is hearing me, because he squeezes my hand and he blinks," she said.
Harris County Sheriff’s deputies said they’re looking at Derrick Gordon’s clothing and bike to see if they can find paint from the vehicle that hit him.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 713- 222-TIPS.
