HOUSTON — More than a dozen relatives and friends attended the custody hearing Tuesday for a 5-month-old baby girl whose parents were found murdered on April 10.
Jose Miguel Salinas, 23, and his girlfriend, Melissa Ann Guerra were killed in their Pavilion Place Apartment in the 5200 block of Renwick. A neighbor was walking her dog when she heard a child screaming and crying. The door was open so she looked inside and found the baby girl lying between the bodies.
Police said there was no apparent forced entry into the apartment and the place had not been ransacked. There were also no witnesses and no one even heard the gunshots.
"It's hard" said Ann Guerra, the child’s grandmother. She was speechless and crying while talking to KHOU 11 News Reporter Malini Basu.
Relatives said the baby’s mother was working at a clothing store. Her boyfriend was a stay-at-home father, because daycare was too expensive.
"Melissa was a good girl, she attended KIPP School since sixth grade until she graduated high school," said Sylvia Mendez, the baby's great-grandmother.
The victims’ child has been in the custody of Child Protective Services.
"We are doing what the court asked us to do right now, we are going to get that done and get her back" said Paul Guerra, the baby's grandfather.
Police released suspect sketches of the two suspects who are still at large. Relatives are begging for the public's help in identifying the men.
"If anybody knows anything, saw anything, come talk to HPD, they need all the help they can get, they're trying." said Mendez.
Meanwhile, the baby's grandmother is trying very hard to get custody of her grandchild.
"(I) want my granddaughter, that's part of Melissa, that's the only thing that I have," said Guerra.
