SPRING, Texas — Hundreds are expected to attend a memorial service Saturday for the Stay family at Lemm Elementary School.
“We are having a celebration of their life,” said Principal Kathy Brown.
The service will start at 10 a.m. and include music, prayers and a launch of 600 balloons, 100 for each of the victims.
The service is taking place where two of the children attended school.
“It’s heartbreaking that this happened to this family,” said Brown. “They would never hurt a person in this world.”
Prosecutors charged Ron Haskell with shooting the family of seven execution style in a bid to locate his ex-wife.
Cassidy Stay, 15, was the lone survivor of the attack and is being credited by authorities for helping them stop Haskell.
“Just the thought of her going through something like this is terrible and so sad,” said Ja’Briea Bennett, Cassidy’s classmate from Klein-Collins High School. “She was just a fun girl, so positive.”
Outside the children’s schools and throughout nearby neighborhoods, people have hung bright ribbons on trees.
At the Stay family’s Spring home, there is a growing memorial; neighbors are leaving candles, cards and stuffed animals.
Lemm Elementary student Jessica Villasana came with her grandmother.
“Well I just wanted to give them my blessings and prayers,” said the third-grade classmate of Emily Stay. “It’s really sad this happened.”
