HOUSTON –- Drivers heading inbound on Memorial Drive were brought to a near standstill after a tree fell in the roadway.

Crews were called in to remove the tree early Tuesday morning near the eastern edge of Memorial Park, but it wasn’t cleared in time for the rush hour commute. Traffic was backed up nearly two miles to the 610 Loop.

The tree fell onto the roadway, blocking one lane, during a heavy downpour overnight.
