HOUSTON – Six southeast Houston elementary students were hurt Friday after an escaped dog attacked them on campus.
HISD said the Cornelius Elementary students were headed to the cafeteria when the dog approached and scratched them, biting one of the children on the ankle. The students were treated at the hospital and released to their parents. The dog, identified as a Bull Terrier mix, was taken into the custody of animal control.
According to the Bureau of Animal Regulation and Care (BARC), a repairman had visited the owners’ home and left the side gate open. The dog escaped and went across the street to the school.
BARC said the same dog had a similar incident September 22 and was impounded for 10 days. The dog’s owners were forced to pay $300 to get it back.
According to BARC, a dangerous dog hearing will be held because the incidents happened so close together. If the dog is found to be dangerous, it will have to wear a red ID tag along with a microchip identifying it as a potential hazard. The owners would also be forced to purchase a more secure enclosure.
BARC said the case was not severe enough to consider euthanizing the dog.
