HOUSTON — An elderly couple, who relatives say did just about everything together, died together in a collision with a pickup truck in northwest Houston Tuesday morning.
Houston police said the husband and wife, who both worked maintenance jobs, were on their way to work when a truck t-boned them in the 4600 block of Southerland around 7 a.m. They were just around the corner from their house.
Jose Mario Tobar, 59, and Digna Tobar, 57, were inseparable, according to grieving family members.
"They working together, they go to church together, they do everything together," said Reina Tobar, Jose’s daughter. "But I don’t think they gonna die together."
Tobar came to the United States to give his six children a better life. They gathered at the crash site, where they hugged and prayed.
The family said they were planning a big 60th birthday celebration for their father in January.
"Daddy, I love you," a crying Reina Tobar said.
The pickup driver lost his job Tuesday morning, according to investigators.
When he learned the couple he crashed into had died, he began screaming and banging on his steering wheel.
The cause of the crash is under investigation. It’s not clear if any charges will be filed.
