HOUSTON -- Police say a driver died after he jumped from a moving vehicle on the Eastex Freeway early Tuesday morning.
The victim’s brother was in the passenger seat and witnessed the whole thing, police said.
It happened shortly before 3 a.m. in the freeway’s northbound lanes near Rankin Road, according to officers with the Houston Police Department.
Gilberto Pacheco Luna, who the brother said was having marital issues, jumped from his Dodge Ram pickup after drinking at a party earlier in the evening. The brother then slid from the passenger seat to the driver’s seat to regain control of the vehicle and turn around.
There were no witnesses to the incident itself, but at least one oncoming driver told police he saw the brother trying to pull the victim out of the roadway.
“He didn’t see the driver jump from the vehicle, but he saw the brother gaining control of the vehicle and bringing it to a stop,” said HPD Sgt. JD Rossman.
Luna, 44, was pronounced dead at the scene. The brother was questioned at the scene and then let go.
The freeway remained closed for more than two hours.
