HOUSTON -- A deadly motorcycle crash shut down in the East Freeway in both directions just outside the 610 Loop early Thursday.

Houston TranStar reported the crash at Mercury Drive shortly after 2 a.m.

Houston police said the rider, 31, was traveling eastbound on the freeway when he lost control and hit the inside wall. The rider flew off his bike and into the opposing lanes of traffic.

Police believe at least one or two vehicles hit the rider, but the drivers did not stop. There were no witnesses to the crash. Authorities pronounced the motorcyclist dead at the scene.

Police later determined the bike involved, a red Yamaha YZF, was stolen from its owner in Harris County.

The freeway remained closed in both directions for more than three hours.
