HOUSTON -- A driver had to be extricated from a vehicle Thursday after he slammed into a grocery store and knocked down a power line, police said.

The wreck happened at about 8:30 p.m. in the 6800 block of Martin Luther King Boulevard.

Witnesses said the driver appeared to be speeding.

"I pulled in my driveway and [he] flew past me at about 90 miles per hour, sideways, took out that sign here and the pole, hit the building," said Wilford Marshal, who witnessed the wreck.

The owner of the building said the incident was a big shock as it happened.

"I thought it was big storm coming in ‘cause I come outside and I see the door --- whole building falling down,” Rizwan Qureshi said.

An ambulance took the driver to the hospital, where he was expected to be OK, officials said.

There were no other injuries reported.
