HOUSTON -- Officers with the Houston Police Department said early Wednesday they know the driver responsible for a fatal crash overnight, but they don’t know where he is because he ran away after the wreck.
The crash was reported around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday on Pardee Street near Wipprecht Street on the northeast side of town.
HPD said three young men were in a car that was speeding westbound when the driver lost control and skidded into a wood utility pole. The impact was so intense, the car broke the utility pole and then went through a fence and stopped against a nearby home.
Police said the teen driver got out and tried to help his friend, 17, out of the back seat, but he ran away once he realized the backseat passenger was dead. A passenger in the front was taken to the hospital in serious but stable condition.
“The front passenger was not being very cooperative with us,” said Sgt. Ignacio Izaguire. “According to the registered owner, which is the mother of the deceased, she has not told us whether or not they had been drinking. We don’t believe alcohol was involved, however we can rule that out at this time.”
Police said they know the identity of the teen who ran away. When caught, he’ll face hit and run charges at the very least, police said.
