HOUSTON –- Police said a driver was killed and three of his passengers were injured when his truck slammed into a concrete pillar while exiting the Eastex Freeway at a high rate of speed.
The accident happened at the southbound exit for Cavalcade Street around 10:30 p.m. Sunday.
According to officers with the Houston Police Department, a GMC Sonoma pickup was traveling at about 100 mph when it went off the ramp, into a grassy area, and then slammed head-on into a freeway support column.
A good Samaritan stopped and helped get everyone out before the truck caught fire.
The driver was pronounced dead while two of his passengers were said to be in critical condition at the hospital. Police said a third passenger was riding in the bed of the pickup and managed to escape serious injury by jumping just before the crash occurred. He was listed in stable condition at the hospital.
No other vehicles were involved.
