HOUSTON – Officers with the Houston Police Department said a 24-year-old pickup driver ran away after crashing into a pole in southwest Houston late Sunday, killing one passenger and injuring another.

The crash was reported around 11:15 p.m. on the southbound frontage road of the Southwest Freeway near Bissonnet Street.

Police said they arrived and found a Ford pickup wrapped around a utility pole. It’s believed the truck was involved in a wreck in the 7500 block of Bellaire Boulevard, and the driver was attempting to speed away when he slammed into the pole.

The driver ran away on foot while one passenger died at the scene, police said. Another passenger was sent to the hospital with unknown injuries. Word spread quickly in a Rosenberg trailer park, where the suspect lives.

“I heard there was an accident last night. That’s what I heard. Then this guy said the cops came looking for him,” said Stephen Delosantos, a neighbor.

Neighbors are speculating.

“(He was) probably drinking,” said Delosantos.

”They’re always outside with friends. What do they normally do? Drink. Smoke and drink,” said Ysenia Nunez, a neighbor.

Beer bottles, CDs and other belongings from the pickup truck were left at the scene. Neighbors are heartbroken and hope the driver turns himself in.

“It’s bad what he did,” said Nunez.

“Too close to Christmas for a tragedy like that to happen,” said Delasantos. Neighbors say the driver used to work at a tire shop and most recently worked for a cement company.

Police are trying to figure out if he fled to his native Mexico.

As the accident was under investigation, several drivers on the freeway were slowing down to look at the crash and a truck collided with a car. Another oncoming vehicle then hit an HPD squad car. There was no immediate word on injuries or charges related to that crash.
