HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – A driver died late Sunday after jumping from his burning car on East Beltway 8, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said around 8 p.m. Joe Henry Campos Jr. wrecked his 1991 Ford Thunderbird in the southbound lanes of Beltway 8 as he attempted to take the exit for Interstate 10.

The wreck caused the car to catch fire, but Campos was unable to open the driver’s side door. Investigators said it appeared Campus exited the other side of the vehicle and then fell from the tollway's elevated exit ramp.

Campos was pronounced dead at the scene.

The case remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office traffic enforcement division.
